Tour Details

Up on arrival at Kigali international airport, you will meet our driver guide who will transfer you to Ruhengeri. The 2hrs: 30min drive will take you from an altitude of about 1,567 m in Kigali to 1,860 m above sea level in Musaze through rolling hills and local communities. On arrival in Musanze town you will visit the Dian Fossey Foundation. In 1967, Dr. Dian Fossey founded the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains to protect and study the endangered mountain gorillas. Although Fossey’s life was cut short, her work has continued through the Karisoke Research Center and grown into conservation efforts for other wildlife and programs for people who live near the gorillas.

“Dian Fossey set up two small tents in the Virunga wilderness and coined the name "Karisoke," after nearby Mt. Karisimbi and Mt. Bisoke. Karisoke has since become the world’s centerpiece for gorilla research and conservation, producing most of our scientific knowledge about gorillas”. Thereafter you will proceed to check in at your lodge followed by lunch. This afternoon you will transfer to visit “Ibyi Iwacu” cultural village.

Ibyi Iwacu” project is changing traditional perceptions of what constitutes tourism by turning fate into fame through sharing various aspects of rural cultures and livelihoods into tourist attractions and creating income-generating activities for rural poor people that have lived on bush meat, poaching for generations. The village provides tourists experiences beyond wildlife viewing, the people, and culture and how they live. The village also gives a chance to the visitors to enjoy the eight different local dances, listen to Gorilla songs, local food preparations, visit the local healer, visit the king’s place and get to hear all the old stories.
Today begins with an early – 06:00 am – drive to the Volcanoes National Park offices for Gorilla Trekking briefing that takes place at 7:00 am. You will then start your walk at 8:00 am.

Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is the home of the rare mountain gorilla and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath, but the high point will be spending an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and appearance as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and raising their young.

After your trek, you will drive back to the lodge to freshen up followed by lunch. This afternoon you will transfer back to Kigali and dropped off at the airport for your flight back home.

Rest of the afternoon spent at own leisure

Gorilla tracking in Rwanda is often described as “life changing” and with good reason. With only an estimated 880 Gorillas left in the world, to see these gentle creatures in their natural habitat is a truly unique moment.

Hikes in the mountains can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours + depending on the family allocated to your group and their location. The journey back can take just as long, but you are often carried along by the euphoria you feel at seeing the gorillas!

Expert guides give a pre-trek briefing on specific protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas that live within an altitude of 2500 and 4000m.
Porters are available to help carry backpacks and cameras, as well as helping you with your footing along your hike which can be hard work, but well worth it.
